Fort d\u2019une sorte de loi m\u00e9on\u00adto\u00adlo\u00adgique, qui, au demeu\u00adrant, fonde l\u2019es\u00adsen\u00adtiel de la pro\u00adbl\u00e9\u00adma\u00adtique m\u00e9di\u00e9\u00advale du mal et rend impos\u00adsible tout retour au mani\u00adch\u00e9isme, Scot affirme que le mal n\u2019ayant aucune posi\u00adti\u00advi\u00adt\u00e9, Dieu ne peut en \u00eatre la cause. Comme le dit Augustin, le mal n\u2019est pas un \u00e9tant, mais un n\u00e9ant, une d\u00e9faillance, un d\u00e9faut du Bien. En un mot, c\u2019est une <em>pri\u00adva\u00adtion<\/em>. Aucune des deux sortes de maux ne doit donc \u00eatre r\u00e9f\u00e9\u00adr\u00e9e \u00e0 Dieu&nbsp;: ni le p\u00e9ch\u00e9, ni la puni\u00adtion du p\u00e9cheur. Le p\u00e9ch\u00e9 na\u00eet quand la volon\u00adt\u00e9 fait <em>d\u00e9faut<\/em> et <em>d\u00e9faille<\/em>, c\u2019est un manque, une n\u00e9an\u00adti\u00adsa\u00adtion de la volon\u00adt\u00e9&nbsp;; le ch\u00e2\u00adti\u00adment n\u2019est rien d\u2019autre que la cons\u00e9\u00adquence du p\u00e9ch\u00e9. Scot reprend, en lui don\u00adnant un accent tout \u00e0 fait ori\u00adgi\u00adnal, un des th\u00e8mes cen\u00adtraux de la th\u00e9o\u00adlo\u00adgie augus\u00adti\u00adnienne. Ce que l\u2019on appelle le <em>mal de peine<\/em> (ou mal de <em>tour\u00adment<\/em>) est inh\u00e9\u00adrent au <em>mal de coulpe<\/em> (ou mal de <em>p\u00e9ch\u00e9<\/em>). La puni\u00adtion est l\u2019im\u00adpos\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adt\u00e9 d\u2019ac\u00adcom\u00adplit le moindre p\u00e9ch\u00e9. Le cou\u00adpable est puni par le fait qu\u2019il ne peut jamais acc\u00e9\u00adder \u00e0 l\u2019es\u00adsence de sa culpa\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adt\u00e9, ni jamais atteindre son \u00eatre cou\u00adpable. Si comme l\u2019a mon\u00adtr\u00e9 Augustin, le p\u00e9ch\u00e9 est une chute vers l\u2019im\u00adpos\u00adsible \u2013 le n\u00e9ant com\u00adplet ne pou\u00advant \u00eatre atteint, le ch\u00e2\u00adti\u00adment du p\u00e9cheur est de ne pou\u00advoir atteindre le n\u00e9ant auquel il aspire, de ne pou\u00advoir \u00e9chap\u00adper \u00e0 l\u2019\u00eatre et, par\u00adtant, \u00e0 Dieu, source de l\u2019\u00eatre. Ce qui tor\u00adture le p\u00e9cheur et le dam\u00adn\u00e9 est la m\u00eame chose&nbsp;: l\u2019im\u00adpos\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adt\u00e9 d\u2019en finir avec l\u2019\u00eatre, avec le bien, avec soi-m\u00eame. Dieu a mis une borne \u00e0 la mali\u00adgni\u00adt\u00e9 du p\u00e9cheur, c\u2019est l\u2019in\u00adcon\u00adsis\u00adtance du p\u00e9ch\u00e9. Le p\u00e9cheur ne peut se perdre dans le p\u00e9ch\u00e9 car il ne peut faire \u00eatre le mal ni faire \u00eatre son p\u00e9ch\u00e9. Si sa doc\u00adtrine du mal et du p\u00e9ch\u00e9 est augus\u00adti\u00adnienne, la cons\u00e9\u00adquence que Jean Scot en tire ne l\u2019est pas&nbsp;: elle consiste, pure\u00adment et sim\u00adple\u00adment, \u00e0 reje\u00adter l\u2019i\u00add\u00e9e d\u2019un enfer phy\u00adsique o\u00f9 les dam\u00adn\u00e9s seront tor\u00adtu\u00adr\u00e9s par le feu.
