Aux ana\u00adlyses de Pakula, on pour\u00adra donc pr\u00e9\u00adf\u00e9\u00adrer cette des\u00adcrip\u00adtion, due \u00e0 Jacques Rivette, d\u2019un plan ana\u00adlogue dans <em>Toute la m\u00e9moire du monde<\/em> d\u2019Alain Resnais (bien plus, on peut consi\u00add\u00e9\u00adrer le plan sur la Biblioth\u00e8que du Congr\u00e8s [dans <em>Les Hommes du Pr\u00e9sident<\/em>] comme une allu\u00adsion \u00e0 ce der\u00adnier) : \u00ab&nbsp;le grand drame de notre civi\u00adli\u00adsa\u00adtion est qu\u2019elle est en train de deve\u00adnir une civi\u00adli\u00adsa\u00adtion de sp\u00e9\u00adcia\u00adlistes. Chacun est de plus en plus enfer\u00adm\u00e9 dans son petit domaine et inca\u00adpable de sor\u00adtir de celui-ci. Personne aujourd\u2019\u00adhui n\u2019est capable de d\u00e9chif\u00adfrer \u00e0 la fois une ins\u00adcrip\u00adtion ancienne et une for\u00admule scien\u00adti\u00adfique moderne. La culture et le tr\u00e9\u00adsor com\u00admun de l\u2019hu\u00adma\u00adni\u00adt\u00e9 sont deve\u00adnus la proie des sp\u00e9\u00adcia\u00adlistes. Je crois que c\u2019\u00e9\u00adtait l\u00e0 l\u2019i\u00add\u00e9e de Resnais en tour\u00adnant la \u201cnatio\u00adnale\u201d. Il vou\u00adlait mon\u00adtrer que la seule t\u00e2che n\u00e9ces\u00adsaire pour l\u2019hu\u00adma\u00adni\u00adt\u00e9, pour essayer de retrou\u00adver cette uni\u00adt\u00e9 de la culture, c\u2019\u00e9\u00adtait par le tra\u00advail de cha\u00adcun, de ras\u00adsem\u00adbler les frag\u00adments \u00e9par\u00adpill\u00e9s de cette culture uni\u00adver\u00adselle en train de se perdre. Et c\u2019est pour\u00adquoi, je pense, <em>Toute la m\u00e9moire du monde<\/em> se ter\u00admi\u00adnait par ces vues de plus en plus hautes de la salle cen\u00adtrale, o\u00f9 l\u2019on voit chaque lec\u00adteur, chaque cher\u00adcheur, dans son coin, pen\u00adch\u00e9 sur son manus\u00adcrit, mais les uns \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 des autres, tous en train d\u2019es\u00adsayer d\u2019as\u00adsem\u00adbler les mor\u00adceaux \u00e9pars de la mosa\u00efque, de retrou\u00adver le secret per\u00addu de l\u2019hu\u00adma\u00adni\u00adt\u00e9, secret qui s\u2019ap\u00adpelle peut-\u00eatre le bonheur.&nbsp;\u00bb<br>\nPourtant, ni le \u00ab&nbsp;secret du bon\u00adheur&nbsp;\u00bb, ni la d\u00e9fense sen\u00adti\u00admen\u00adtale de la consti\u00adtu\u00adtion am\u00e9\u00adri\u00adcaine sur laquelle s\u2019a\u00adch\u00e8ve le film de Pakula, ne consti\u00adtuent la meilleure fa\u00e7on de sp\u00e9\u00adci\u00adfier la conjonc\u00adtion inter\u00admit\u00adtente entre l\u2019ac\u00adcom\u00adplis\u00adse\u00adment de la des\u00adti\u00adn\u00e9e et l\u2019a\u00adper\u00ad\u00e7u presque exta\u00adtique du para\u00addi\u00adsiaque. On pense \u00e0 la th\u00e8se per\u00adverse des \u00ab&nbsp;capi\u00adtal-logi\u00adciens&nbsp;\u00bb&nbsp;: ce que Hegel, en pro\u00adc\u00e9\u00addant \u00e0 son inven\u00adtaire, appe\u00adlait l\u2019Esprit abso\u00adlu, il faut de notre point de vue l\u2019i\u00adden\u00adti\u00adfier d\u00e9sor\u00admais au Capital&nbsp;; d\u00e9sor\u00admais, c\u2019est l\u2019\u00e9\u00adtude du Capital qui est notre v\u00e9ri\u00adtable onto\u00adlo\u00adgie. Le nou\u00adveau sys\u00adt\u00e8me mon\u00addial, le troi\u00adsi\u00e8me stade du capi\u00adta\u00adlisme, est pour nous la tota\u00adli\u00adt\u00e9 absente, le \u00ab&nbsp;Dieu ou la Nature&nbsp;\u00bb de Spinoza, le r\u00e9f\u00e9\u00adrent ultime (et peut-\u00eatre le seul), le v\u00e9ri\u00adtable fon\u00adde\u00adment de l\u2019\u00catre de notre&nbsp;temps.<br>\nSeule une contem\u00adpla\u00adtion de ses appa\u00adri\u00adtions spas\u00admo\u00addiques nous per\u00admet\u00adtra de d\u00e9voi\u00adler son ave\u00adnir, mais aus\u00adsi le&nbsp;n\u00f4tre&nbsp;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On le voit, le phi\u00adlo\u00adsophe pos\u00ads\u00e8de aus\u00adsi son mil\u00adl\u00e9\u00adna\u00adrisme (<em>Chiliasmus<\/em>) ; mais pour en favo\u00adri\u00adser l\u2019a\u00adv\u00e8\u00adne\u00adment, l\u2019i\u00add\u00e9e qu\u2019elle s\u2019en fait, encore de tr\u00e8s loin seule\u00adment, peut jouer un r\u00f4le par elle-m\u00eame. Ce n\u2019est donc nul\u00adle\u00adment une r\u00eave\u00adrie de vision\u00adnaire. Il s\u2019a\u00adgit seule\u00adment de savoir si l\u2019ex\u00adp\u00e9\u00adrience r\u00e9v\u00e8le quelque chose qui jus\u00adti\u00adfie un tel pro\u00adces\u00adsus dans les plans de la nature. Je dis \u201cun tant soit peu\u201d, car ce cir\u00adcuit semble exi\u00adger un tel laps de temps avant de se fer\u00admer que, si nous nous fon\u00addons sur la por\u00adtion infime par\u00adcou\u00adrue jus\u00adqi\u2019i\u00adci par l\u2019hu\u00adma\u00adni\u00adt\u00e9 dans ce domaine, on ne peut d\u00e9ter\u00admi\u00adner la forme de ce cir\u00adcuit et les rap\u00adports des par\u00adties au tout qu\u2019a\u00advec bien peu de cer\u00adti\u00adtude. Pareillement, en s\u2019ap\u00adpuyant sur toutes les obser\u00adva\u00adtions du ciel faites jus\u00adqu\u2019i\u00adci, entre\u00advoit-on bien dif\u00adfi\u00adci\u00adle\u00adment la course qu\u2019ac\u00adcom\u00adplit notre soleil et tout son cor\u00adt\u00e8ge de satel\u00adlites dans le grand sys\u00adt\u00e8me des pla\u00adn\u00e8tes&nbsp;; cepen\u00addant, le peu qu\u2019on a obser\u00adv\u00e9 du fon\u00adde\u00adment g\u00e9n\u00e9\u00adral de la consti\u00adtu\u00adtion sys\u00adt\u00e9\u00adma\u00adtique de l\u2019\u00e9\u00addi\u00adfice du monde nous donne assez peu de cer\u00adti\u00adtude pour conclure \u00e0 la r\u00e9a\u00adli\u00adt\u00e9 de cette r\u00e9vo\u00adlu\u00adtion. En atten\u00addant, la nature humaine adopte l\u2019at\u00adti\u00adtude sui\u00advante&nbsp;: m\u00eame \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9\u00adgard de l\u2019\u00e9\u00adpoque la plus \u00e9loi\u00adgn\u00e9e que doit atteindre notre esp\u00e8ce, elle ne demeure pas indif\u00adf\u00e9\u00adrente, \u00e0 condi\u00adtion de pou\u00advoir l\u2019at\u00adteindre avec cer\u00adti\u00adtude.&nbsp;\u00bb <sup class=\"footnote\"><a href=\"#fn-15379-1\" id=\"fnref-15379-1\" onclick=\"return fdfootnote_show(15379)\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"langue-originale\">\n<p>The moun\u00adting came\u00adra shot, which dimi\u00adnishes the feve\u00adred researches of the two inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtors as it rises to dis\u00adclose the fro\u00adzen cos\u00admo\u00adlo\u00adgy of the rea\u00adding room\u2019s cir\u00adcu\u00adlar bal\u00adco\u00adnies, confirms the momen\u00adta\u00adry coin\u00adci\u00addence bet\u00adween know\u00adledge as such and the archi\u00adtec\u00adtu\u00adral order of the astro\u00adno\u00admi\u00adcal tota\u00adli\u00adty itself, and yields a brief glimpse of the pro\u00advi\u00adden\u00adtial, as what orga\u00adnizes his\u00adto\u00adry but is unre\u00adpre\u00adsen\u00adtable within it.<br>\nTo Pakula\u2019s account, then, may be pre\u00adfer\u00adred this des\u00adcrip\u00adtion, by Jacques Rivette, of the ana\u00adlo\u00adgous shot in Resnais\u201d <em>Toute la memoire du monde<\/em> (to which indeed the Library of Congress shot may be seen as an allu\u00adsion) : \u00ab&nbsp;the most cru\u00adcial thing that\u2019s hap\u00adpe\u00adning to our civi\u00adli\u00adza\u00adtion is that it is in the pro\u00adcess of beco\u00adming a civi\u00adli\u00adza\u00adtion of spe\u00adcia\u00adlists. Each one of us is more and more locked into his own lit\u00adtle domain, and inca\u00adpable of lea\u00adving it. There is no one nowa\u00addays who has the capa\u00adci\u00adty to deci\u00adpher both an ancient ins\u00adcrip\u00adtion and a modern scien\u00adti\u00adfic for\u00admu\u00adla. Culture and the com\u00admon trea\u00adsure of man\u00adkind have become the prey of the spe\u00adcia\u00adlists. I think that was what Resnais had in mind when he made Toute la memoire du monde. He wan\u00adted to show that the only task neces\u00adsa\u00adry for man\u00adkind in the search for that uni\u00adty of culture was, through the work of eve\u00adry indi\u00advi\u00addual, to try to reas\u00adsemble the scat\u00adte\u00adred frag\u00adments of the uni\u00adver\u00adsal culture that is being lost. And I think that is why <em>Toute la memoire du monde<\/em> ended with those higher and higher shots of the cen\u00adtral hall, where you can see each rea\u00adder, each resear\u00adcher in his place, bent over his manus\u00adcript, yet all of them side by side, all in the pro\u00adcess of trying to assemble the scat\u00adte\u00adred pieces of the mosaic, to find the lost secret of huma\u00adni\u00adty&nbsp;; a secret that is per\u00adhaps cal\u00adled happiness&nbsp;\u00bb<br>\nYet even the \u201csecret of hap\u00adpi\u00adness\u201d \u2013 like the sen\u00adti\u00admen\u00adtal defense of the US consti\u00adtu\u00adtion with which Pakula\u2019s film overt\u00adly ends \u2013 may not be the best way of spe\u00adci\u00adfying the way in which, here, the solem\u00adni\u00adty of a wor\u00adking out of des\u00adti\u00adny is conjoi\u00adned inter\u00admit\u00adtent\u00adly with a well-nigh ecs\u00adta\u00adtic glimpse of the para\u00addi\u00adsal. One thinks of the per\u00adverse argu\u00adments of the so-cal\u00adled Capital-logi\u00adcians&nbsp;: that what Hegel, in the pro\u00adcess of making his exhaus\u00adtive inven\u00adto\u00adry of it, cal\u00adled Absolute Spirit, is now from our pers\u00adpec\u00adtive rather to be iden\u00adti\u00adfied as Capital itself, whose stu\u00addy is now our true onto\u00adlo\u00adgy. It is indeed the new world sys\u00adtem, the third stage of capi\u00adta\u00adlism, which is for us the absent tota\u00adli\u00adty, Spinoza\u2019s God or Nature, the ulti\u00admate (indeed, per\u00adhaps the only) referent, the true ground of Being of our own time. Only by way of its fit\u00adful contem\u00adpla\u00adtion can its future, and our own, be some\u00adhow dis\u00adclo\u00adsed&nbsp;: \u00ab&nbsp;We can see that phi\u00adlo\u00adso\u00adphy too may have its chi\u00adlias\u00adtic expec\u00adta\u00adtions&nbsp;; but they are of such a kind that their ful\u00adfilment can be has\u00adte\u00adned, if only indi\u00adrect\u00adly, by a know\u00adledge of the idea they are based on, so that they are any\u00adthing but over-fan\u00adci\u00adful. The real test is whe\u00adther expe\u00adrience can dis\u00adco\u00adver any\u00adthing to indi\u00adcate a pur\u00adpo\u00adse\u00adful natu\u00adral pro\u00adcess of this kind. In my opi\u00adnion, it can dis\u00adco\u00adver a lit\u00adtle&nbsp;; for this cycle of events seems to take so long a time to com\u00adplete, that the small part of it tra\u00adver\u00adsed by man\u00adkind up till now does not allow us to deter\u00admine with cer\u00adtain\u00adty the shape of the whole cycle, and the rela\u00adtion of its parts to the whole. It is no easier than it is to deter\u00admine, from all hither\u00adto avai\u00adlable astro\u00adno\u00admi\u00adcal obser\u00adva\u00adtions, the path which our sun with its whole swarm of satel\u00adlites is fol\u00adlo\u00adwing within the vast sys\u00adtem of the fixed stars&nbsp;; although from the gene\u00adral pre\u00admise that the uni\u00adverse is consti\u00adtu\u00adted as a sys\u00adtem and from the lit\u00adtle which has been learnt by obser\u00adva\u00adtion, we can conclude with suf\u00adfi\u00adcient cer\u00adtain\u00adty that a move\u00adment of this kind does exist in rea\u00adli\u00adty.
