Postcolonial thought and historical difference)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Subaltern his\u00adto\u00adries writ\u00adten with an eye to dif\u00adfe\u00adrence can\u00adnot consti\u00adtute yet ano\u00adther attempt, in the long and uni\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adlis\u00adtic tra\u00addi\u00adtion of \u201csocia\u00adlist\u201d his\u00adto\u00adries, to help erect the subal\u00adtern as the sub\u00adject of modern demo\u00adcra\u00adcies, that is, to expand the his\u00adto\u00adry of the modern in such a way as to make it more repre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtive of socie\u00adty as a whole. This is a lau\u00addable objec\u00adtive on its own terms and has undoub\u00adted glo\u00adbal rele\u00advance. But thought does not have to stop at poli\u00adti\u00adcal demo\u00adcra\u00adcy or the concept of ega\u00adli\u00adta\u00adrian dis\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtion of wealth (though the aim of achie\u00adving these ends will legi\u00adti\u00adma\u00adte\u00adly fuel many imme\u00addiate poli\u00adti\u00adcal struggles). Subaltern his\u00adto\u00adries will engage phi\u00adlo\u00adso\u00adphi\u00adcal\u00adly with ques\u00adtions of dif\u00adfe\u00adrence that are eli\u00added in the domi\u00adnant tra\u00addi\u00adtions of Marxism. At the<a id=\"page_95\"><\/a> same time, howe\u00adver, just as real labor can\u00adnot be thought of out\u00adside of the pro\u00adble\u00adma\u00adtic of abs\u00adtract labor, subal\u00adtern his\u00adto\u00adry can\u00adnot be thought of out\u00adside of the glo\u00adbal nar\u00adra\u00adtive of capital\u2014including the nar\u00adra\u00adtive of tran\u00adsi\u00adtion to capitalism\u2014though it is not groun\u00added in this nar\u00adra\u00adtive. Stories about how this or that group in Asia, Africa, or Latin America resis\u00adted the \u201cpene\u00adtra\u00adtion\u201d of capi\u00adta\u00adlism do not, in this sense, consti\u00adtute \u201csubal\u00adtern\u201d his\u00adto\u00adry, for these nar\u00adra\u00adtives are pre\u00addi\u00adca\u00adted on ima\u00adgi\u00adning a space that is exter\u00adnal to capital\u2014the chro\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal\u00adly \u201cbefore\u201d of capital\u2014but that is at the same time a part of the his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adcist, uni\u00adta\u00adry time frame within which both the \u201cbefore\u201d and the \u201cafter\u201d of capi\u00adta\u00adlist pro\u00adduc\u00adtion can unfold. The \u201cout\u00adside\u201d I am thin\u00adking of is dif\u00adferent from what is sim\u00adply ima\u00adgi\u00adned as \u201cbefore or after capi\u00adtal\u201d in his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adcist prose. This \u201cout\u00adside\u201d I think of, fol\u00adlo\u00adwing Derrida, as some\u00adthing atta\u00adched to the cate\u00adgo\u00adry \u201ccapi\u00adtal\u201d itself, some\u00adthing that straddles a bor\u00adder zone of tem\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adli\u00adty, that conforms to the tem\u00adpo\u00adral code within which capi\u00adtal comes into being even as it vio\u00adlates that code, some\u00adthing we are able to see only because we can think\/theorize capi\u00adtal, but that also always reminds us that other tem\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adli\u00adties, other forms of worl\u00adding, coexist and are pos\u00adsible. In this sense, subal\u00adtern his\u00adto\u00adries do not refer to a resis\u00adtance prior and exte\u00adrior to the nar\u00adra\u00adtive space crea\u00adted by capi\u00adtal&nbsp;; they can\u00adnot the\u00adre\u00adfore be defi\u00adned without refe\u00adrence to the cate\u00adgo\u00adry \u201ccapi\u00adtal.\u201d Subaltern stu\u00addies, as I think of it, can only situate itself theo\u00adre\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly at the junc\u00adture where we give up nei\u00adther Marx nor \u201cdif\u00adfe\u00adrence,\u201d for, as I have said, the resis\u00adtance it speaks of is some\u00adthing that can hap\u00adpen only <i class=\"calibre3\">within<\/i> the time hori\u00adzon of capi\u00adtal, and yet it has to be thought of as some\u00adthing that dis\u00adrupts the uni\u00adty of that time.
