We can ans\u00adwer this ques\u00adtion affir\u00adma\u00adti\u00adve\u00adly. We remem\u00adber, for example, in Marx\u2019s words, that \u00ab&nbsp;exchange-value is a defi\u00adnite social man\u00adner of expres\u00adsing the amount of labor bes\u00adto\u00adwed upon an object&nbsp;\u00bb (C., I, p. 82). It is obvious that labor is here trea\u00adted as the abs\u00adtract content which can take this or that social form. When Marx, in the well-known let\u00adter to Kugelmann of July 11, 1868, says that the social divi\u00adsion of labor is mani\u00adfes\u00adted in the com\u00admo\u00addi\u00adty eco\u00adno\u00admy in the form of value, he again treats social\u00adly allo\u00adca\u00adted labor as the content which can take this or that social form. In the second para\u00adgraph of the sec\u00adtion on Commodity Fetishism, Marx says direct\u00adly that \u00ab&nbsp;the content of the deter\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion of value&nbsp;\u00bb can be found not only in the com\u00admo\u00addi\u00adty eco\u00adno\u00admy but also in the patriar\u00adchal fami\u00adly or on the feu\u00addal estate. Here, too, as we can see, labor is trea\u00adted as the content which can take various social forms.<\/p>\n<p>However, in Marx\u2019s work one can also find argu\u00adments in favor of the oppo\u00adsite view\u00adpoint, accor\u00adding to which we must consi\u00adder abs\u00adtract labor as the content of value. First of all, we find in Marx\u2019s work some sta\u00adte\u00adments which direct\u00adly say this, for example the fol\u00adlo\u00adwing&nbsp;: \u00ab&nbsp;They (com\u00admo\u00addi\u00adties) are rela\u00adted to <em>abs\u00adtract<\/em> human labor as to their gene\u00adral social sub\u00adstance&nbsp;\u00bb <em>(Kapital,<\/em> 1, 1867, p. 28. Italics by I. R.). This sta\u00adte\u00adment seems to leave no doubt about the fact that abs\u00adtract labor is not only the crea\u00adtor of value, but also the sub\u00adstance and content of value. We reach this same conclu\u00adsion on the basis of metho\u00addo\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal consi\u00adde\u00adra\u00adtions. Socially equa\u00adli\u00adzed labor acquires the form of abs\u00adtract labor in the com\u00admo\u00addi\u00adty eco\u00adno\u00admy, and only from this abs\u00adtract labor fol\u00adlows the neces\u00adsi\u00adty of value as the social form of the pro\u00adduct of labor. From this it fol\u00adlows that the concept of abs\u00adtract labor in our sche\u00adma direct\u00adly pre\u00adcedes the concept of value. One might say that this concept of abs\u00adtract labor must be taken as the basis, as the content and sub\u00adstance of value. One can\u00adnot for\u00adget that, on the ques\u00adtion of the rela\u00adtion bet\u00adween content and form, Marx took the stand\u00adpoint of Hegel, and not of Kant. Kant trea\u00adted form as some\u00adthing exter\u00adnal in rela\u00adtion to the content, and as some\u00adthing which adheres to the content from the out\u00adside. From the stand\u00adpoint of Hegel\u2019s phi\u00adlo\u00adso\u00adphy, the content is not in itself some\u00adthing to which form adheres from the out\u00adside. Rather, through its deve\u00adlop\u00adment, the content itself gives birth to the form which was alrea\u00addy latent in the content. Form neces\u00adsa\u00adri\u00adly grows out of the content itself. This is a basic pre\u00admise of Hegel\u2019s and Marx\u2019s metho\u00addo\u00adlo\u00adgy, a pre\u00admise which is oppo\u00adsed to Kant\u2019s metho\u00addo\u00adlo\u00adgy. From this point of view, the form of value neces\u00adsa\u00adri\u00adly grows out of the sub\u00adstance of value. Therefore, we must take abs\u00adtract labor in all the varie\u00adty of its social pro\u00adper\u00adties cha\u00adrac\u00adte\u00adris\u00adtic for a com\u00admo\u00addi\u00adty eco\u00adno\u00admy, as the sub\u00adstance of value. And, final\u00adly, if we take abs\u00adtract labor as the content of value, we achieve a signi\u00adfi\u00adcant sim\u00adpli\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion of Marx\u2019s entire sche\u00adma.
