Certainly this was true of Daniel Defoe\u2019s book, <em>The Journal of the Plague Year<\/em>, which was osten\u00adsi\u00adbly about the Great Plague of London in 1665 but which actual\u00adly was contri\u00adbu\u00adtion to the plan\u00adning of the plague in 1721 when both the bubo\u00adnic plague and the small\u00adpox re-appea\u00adred in Europe and the wes\u00adtern Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>In 1721 the bubo\u00adnic plague appea\u00adred in Marseilles where it was met with reli\u00adgious pie\u00adty and repres\u00adsive quar\u00adantine. In the Dutch ports car\u00adgoes were burnt and sai\u00adlors for\u00adced to swim ashore naked. In London mer\u00adchants, ree\u00adling under the inter\u00adrup\u00adtions of their pro\u00adfits by the finan\u00adcial scan\u00addals of the South Sea Bubble, were reluc\u00adtant to agree to simi\u00adlar mea\u00adsures of qua\u00adran\u00adtine. The dan\u00adger appea\u00adred at a conjunc\u00adture of a) rural gue\u00adrilla move\u00adment in some recent\u00adly expro\u00adpria\u00adted Royal forests, b) serious strikes by the indus\u00adtrial wea\u00advers of London, c) an urban crime wave, and d) mobs rio\u00adting against the Royal dynasty.<\/p>\n<p>These insta\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adties took place amid\u00adst a wides\u00adpread debate about the indis\u00adci\u00adpline of the wor\u00adking class and the desi\u00adra\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty of esta\u00adbli\u00adshing wor\u00adkhouses.
