During its great age in the nine\u00adteenth cen\u00adtu\u00adry it pro\u00addu\u00adced scho\u00adlars&nbsp;; it increa\u00adsed the num\u00adber of lan\u00adguages taught in the West and the quan\u00adti\u00adty of manus\u00adcripts edi\u00adted, trans\u00adla\u00adted, and com\u00admen\u00adted on&nbsp;; in many cases, it pro\u00advi\u00added the Orient with sym\u00adpa\u00adthe\u00adtic European stu\u00addents, genui\u00adne\u00adly inter\u00ades\u00adted in such mat\u00adters as Sanskrit gram\u00admar, Phoenician numis\u00adma\u00adtics, and Arabic poe\u00adtry. Yet\u2014and here we must be very clear\u2014Orientalism over\u00adrode the Orient. As a sys\u00adtem of thought about the Orient, it always rose from the spe\u00adci\u00adfi\u00adcal\u00adly human detail to the gene\u00adral trans\u00adhu\u00adman one&nbsp;; an obser\u00adva\u00adtion about a tenth-cen\u00adtu\u00adry Arab poet mul\u00adti\u00adplied itself into a poli\u00adcy towards (and about) the Oriental men\u00adta\u00adli\u00adty in Egypt, Iraq, or Arabia. Similarly a verse from the Koran would be consi\u00adde\u00adred the best evi\u00addence of an inera\u00addi\u00adcable Muslim sen\u00adsua\u00adli\u00adty.
