Son pou\u00advoir consiste \u00e0 avoir exis\u00adt\u00e9 au milieu d\u2019eux comme un locu\u00adteur indi\u00adg\u00e8ne, pour\u00adrait-on dire, et aus\u00adsi comme un \u00e9cri\u00advain secret. Et ce qu\u2019il \u00e9crit est des\u00adti\u00adn\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00eatre un savoir utile non pour eux, mais pour l\u2019Europe et ses dif\u00adf\u00e9\u00adrentes ins\u00adti\u00adtu\u00adtions de dif\u00adfu\u00adsion. Car il y a une chose que la prose de Lane ne nous laisse jamais oublier&nbsp;: que le moi, le pro\u00adnom de la pre\u00admi\u00e8re per\u00adsonne qui se d\u00e9place en Egypte \u00e0 tra\u00advers les cou\u00adtumes, les rituels, les f\u00eates, l\u2019enfance, l\u2019\u00e2ge adulte et les rites fun\u00e9\u00adraires, est, en r\u00e9a\u00adli\u00adt\u00e9, \u00e0 la fois un d\u00e9gui\u00adse\u00adment orien\u00adtal et un pro\u00adc\u00e9\u00add\u00e9 orien\u00adta\u00adliste des\u00adti\u00adn\u00e9 \u00e0 cap\u00adter et trans\u00admettre des infor\u00adma\u00adtions de valeur, qui ne seraient pas acces\u00adsibles autre\u00adment. Comme nar\u00adra\u00adteur, Lane est \u00e0 la fois objet mon\u00adtr\u00e9 et mon\u00adtreur, il gagne de deux c\u00f4t\u00e9s du m\u00eame coup, fai\u00adsant preuve de deux sortes d\u2019app\u00e9tit&nbsp;: un app\u00e9\u00adtit orien\u00adtal qui le pousse \u00e0 nouer des cama\u00adra\u00adde\u00adries (du moins \u00e0 ce qu\u2019il semble), et un app\u00e9\u00adtit occi\u00adden\u00adtal pour acqu\u00e9\u00adrir des connais\u00adsances utiles et qui fassent autorit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<div class=\"langue-originale\">\n<p>The Orientalist can imi\u00adtate the Orient without the oppo\u00adsite being true. What he says about the Orient is the\u00adre\u00adfore to be unders\u00adtood as des\u00adcrip\u00adtion obtai\u00adned in a one-way exchange&nbsp;: as <em>they<\/em> spoke and beha\u00adved, <em>he<\/em> obser\u00adved and wrote down. For that is one thing that Lane\u2019s prose never lets us for\u00adget&nbsp;: that ego, the first-per\u00adson pro\u00adnoun moving through Egyptian cus\u00adtoms, rituals, fes\u00adti\u00advals, infan\u00adcy, adul\u00adthood, and burial rites, is in rea\u00adli\u00adty both an Oriental mas\u00adque\u00adrade and an Orientalist device for cap\u00adtu\u00adring and conveying valuable, other\u00adwise inac\u00adces\u00adsible infor\u00adma\u00adtion.
