To do this he must see eve\u00adry detail through the device of a set of reduc\u00adtive cate\u00adgo\u00adries (the Semites, the Muslim mind, the Orient, and so forth). Since these cate\u00adgo\u00adries are pri\u00adma\u00adri\u00adly sche\u00adma\u00adtic and effi\u00adcient ones, and since it is more or less assu\u00admed that no Oriental can know him\u00adself the way an Orientalist can, any vision of the Orient ulti\u00adma\u00adte\u00adly comes to rely for its cohe\u00adrence and force on the per\u00adson, ins\u00adti\u00adtu\u00adtion, or dis\u00adcourse whose pro\u00adper\u00adty it is.
