These desires may be real or ima\u00adgi\u00adned, concen\u00adtra\u00adted or diffuse\u2014a boyfriend\u2019s sexual needs, a set of cultu\u00adral expec\u00adta\u00adtions, a lite\u00adral pregnancy\u2014but in all cases, the self is hol\u00adlo\u00adwed out, made into an incu\u00adba\u00adtor for an alien force. To be female is to let someone else do your desi\u00adring for you, at your own expense. This means that fema\u00adle\u00adness, while it hurts only some\u00adtimes, is always bad for you. Clearly, this is a wild\u00adly ten\u00adden\u00adtious defi\u00adni\u00adtion. It\u2019s even more far-fet\u00adched if you, like me, are applying it to everyone\u2014literally eve\u00adryone, eve\u00adry single human being in the his\u00adto\u00adry of the pla\u00adnet. So it\u2019s true : When I talk about females, I am not refer\u00adring to bio\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal sex, though I\u2019m not refer\u00adring to gen\u00adder, either. I\u2019m refer\u00adring ins\u00adtead to some\u00adthing that might as well be sex, the way that reac\u00adtio\u00adna\u00adries des\u00adcribe it (per\u00adma\u00adnent, unchan\u00adging, etc.), but whose nature is onto\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal, not bio\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal. Femaleness is not an ana\u00adto\u00admi\u00adcal or gene\u00adtic cha\u00adrac\u00adte\u00adris\u00adtic of an orga\u00adnism, but rather a uni\u00adver\u00adsal exis\u00adten\u00adtial condi\u00adtion, the one and only struc\u00adture of human conscious\u00adness. Everyone is female, but how one copes with being female\u2014the spe\u00adci\u00adfic defense mecha\u00adnisms that one conscious\u00adly or uncons\u00adcious\u00adly deve\u00adlops as a reac\u00adtion for\u00adma\u00adtion against one\u2019s fema\u00adle\u00adness, within the terms of what is his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adcal\u00adly and socio\u00adcul\u00adtu\u00adral\u00adly available\u2014this is what we ordi\u00adna\u00adri\u00adly call gen\u00adder. Men and women must the\u00adre\u00adfore be unders\u00adtood not as irre\u00adcon\u00adci\u00adlable oppo\u00adsites, or even as two poles of a spec\u00adtrum, but more sim\u00adply as the two most com\u00admon phy\u00adla of the king\u00addom Females. It might be asked : if men, women, and eve\u00adryone else all share this condi\u00adtion, why conti\u00adnue to refer to it with an obvious\u00adly gen\u00adde\u00adred term like females ? By the second claim, I mean some\u00adthing like what Valerie meant : that human civi\u00adli\u00adza\u00adtion repre\u00adsents a diverse array of attempts to sup\u00adpress and miti\u00adgate fema\u00adle\u00adness, that this is in fact the impli\u00adcit pur\u00adpose of all human acti\u00advi\u00adty, and, most of all, that acti\u00advi\u00adty we call poli\u00adtics. The poli\u00adti\u00adcal is the sworn ene\u00admy of the female ; poli\u00adtics begins, in eve\u00adry case, from the opti\u00admis\u00adtic belief that ano\u00adther sex is pos\u00adsible. This is the root of all poli\u00adti\u00adcal conscious\u00adness : the daw\u00adning rea\u00adli\u00adza\u00adtion that one\u2019s desires are not one\u2019s own, that one has become a vehicle for someone else\u2019s ego ; in short, that one is female, but wishes it were not so. Politics is, in its essence, anti-female.<\/p>\n
This claim extends to the varie\u00adty of women\u2019s move\u00adments in the twen\u00adtieth and twen\u00adty-first cen\u00adtu\u00adry that may be col\u00adlec\u00adted under the name of femi\u00adnist poli\u00adtics ; in fact, the conscious dis\u00adco\u00adve\u00adry that being female is bad for you might be des\u00adcri\u00adbed as quin\u00adtes\u00adsen\u00adtial\u00adly femi\u00adnist. Perhaps the oldest right-wing accu\u00adsa\u00adtion brought by men and other women against femi\u00adnists, whe\u00adther they deman\u00added civic equa\u00adli\u00adty or anti-male revo\u00adlu\u00adtion, was that femi\u00adnists were real\u00adly asking, quite sim\u00adply, not to be women any\u00admore.
