Nowhere is this more evident today than in the manos\u00adphere, that awful\u00adly named borough of the Internet where pickup artists, men\u2019s rights acti\u00advists, incels, Men Going Their Own Way, and other alt-right com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties go to com\u00admi\u00adse\u00adrate, swap tips, and air their woman-hating and racism without fear of repri\u00adsal. At the heart of the manos\u00adphere lies the convic\u00adtion that men\u2014paradigmatically, though not always, white men\u2014have lost sta\u00adtus in the past fif\u00adty years, ulti\u00adma\u00adte\u00adly thanks to the rise of femi\u00adnism. To awa\u00adken to this fact is to take the red pill\u2014a phrase bor\u00adro\u00adwed from the 1999 film The Matrix, whose hacker pro\u00adta\u00adgo\u00adnist Neo is given the choice bet\u00adween a red pill and a blue. The lat\u00adter will return Neo to his simu\u00adla\u00adted eve\u00adry\u00adday life with no memo\u00adry of the choice&nbsp;; the for\u00admer, which he picks, trans\u00adports him out of the Matrix and into the real world where huma\u00adni\u00adty has been ensla\u00adved by sen\u00adtient machines. In recent years, the alt-right has co-opted the scene as a parable for seeing past femi\u00adnist brain\u00adwa\u00adshing to the truth&nbsp;: femi\u00adnism is a disease, all women wish to be domi\u00adna\u00adted, and nice guys finish last.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, ano\u00adther inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion of the red pill is pos\u00adsible. Trans women have clai\u00admed The Matrix as an alle\u00adgo\u00adry for gen\u00adder tran\u00adsi\u00adtion since at least 2012, when direc\u00adtor Lana Wachowski publi\u00adcly came out as a trans woman while doing press for the film Cloud Atlas. (Her sis\u00adter and codi\u00adrec\u00adtor Lilly fol\u00adlo\u00adwed suit in 2016.) The sym\u00adbo\u00adlism is easy to find in the plot&nbsp;: Thomas Anderson\u2019s double life (he\u2019s a hacker by night), his cho\u00adsen name (Neo), his vague but mad\u00adde\u00adning sense that some\u00adthing is off about the world (\u201ca splin\u00adter in your mind,\u201d resis\u00adtance lea\u00adder Morpheus calls it). Neo has dys\u00adpho\u00adria. The Matrix is the gen\u00adder bina\u00adry. You get&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n<p>And then there\u2019s the red pill itself, less a meta\u00adphor for hor\u00admone the\u00adra\u00adpy than a lite\u00adral hor\u00admone. Many have poin\u00adted out online that back in the nine\u00adties, pres\u00adcrip\u00adtion estro\u00adgen was, in fact, red&nbsp;: the 0.625 mg Premarin tablet, deri\u00adved in Matrix-like fashion from the urine of pre\u00adgnant mares, came in smooth, cho\u00adco\u00adla\u00adtey maroon. Trans allies on Twitter now glee\u00adful\u00adly bran\u00addish this fact as a well, actually\u2013style rejoin\u00adder to the alt-right\u2019s recent co-opta\u00adtion of the red pill scene as a parable for \u201cawa\u00adke\u00adning\u201d from femi\u00adnist brainwashing.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s some\u00adthing to this. Taken serious\u00adly, it sug\u00adgests that the manos\u00adphere red-piller\u2019s resent\u00adment of immi\u00adgrants, black people, and queers is a sadis\u00adtic expres\u00adsion of his own gen\u00adder dys\u00adpho\u00adria. In this rea\u00adding, he is an abor\u00adtive man, a beta trap\u00adped in an alpha\u2019s body, consu\u00admed with the desire to be female and des\u00adpe\u00adra\u00adte\u00adly trying to repress it. His desire to increase his man\u00adhood is not pri\u00adma\u00adry, but a second-tier defense mecha\u00adnism. Those around him assume he is a lea\u00adder, a pro\u00advi\u00adder, a pre\u00adsident&nbsp;; but his grea\u00adtest fear is that they are mis\u00adta\u00adken. He radicalizes\u2014shoots up a school, builds a wall\u2014in order to avoid tran\u00adsi\u00adtio\u00adning, the way some clo\u00adse\u00adted trans women join the mili\u00adta\u00adry in order to get the girl bea\u00adten out of&nbsp;them.<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s ano\u00adther level. The Wachowski sis\u00adters, even if they knew about Premarin, could never have pre\u00addic\u00adted that the most com\u00admon form of pres\u00adcrip\u00adtion estro\u00adgen today would be blue. Aquamarine, actually\u2014a tiny, coarse 2 mg estra\u00addiol pill sup\u00adplied by Israeli phar\u00adma\u00adceu\u00adti\u00adcal com\u00adpa\u00adny Teva that turns to pow\u00adder in your mouth. At present, I take the blue pill twice a day, once upon waking and once before bed, sen\u00adding myself back into the simu\u00adla\u00adtion. By this logic, the hid\u00adden trans woman of The Matrix is not the mes\u00adsia\u00adnic Neo, but Cypher, the slea\u00adzy trai\u00adtor, who agrees to hand Morpheus over to the machines in exchange for being rein\u00adser\u00adted into the Matrix. \u201cIgnorance is bliss,\u201d he tells the agents, mouth full of jui\u00adcy, nonexistent steak. (Recall that cipher is an old word for zero.) \u201cI don\u2019t wan\u00adna remem\u00adber nothing. Nothing. You understand?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie would have appro\u00adved of hor\u00admone the\u00adra\u00adpy, I think. The SCUM Manifesto alludes, posi\u00adti\u00adve\u00adly, to a futu\u00adris\u00adtic world where men are trans\u00adfor\u00admed into women \u201cby means of ope\u00adra\u00adtions on the brain and ner\u00advous sys\u00adtem.\u201d This was one of SCUM\u2019s non\u00adge\u00adno\u00adci\u00addal solu\u00adtions for the few men who might remain after the revo\u00adlu\u00adtion.
