\nAn ongoing neces\u00adsi\u00adty like dir\u00adty dishes nee\u00adding to be done doesn\u2019t pro\u00adduce nar\u00adra\u00adtive. It pro\u00adduces quan\u00adti\u00adties, like how many dishes were washed. It pro\u00adduces tem\u00adpo\u00adral mea\u00adsu\u00adre\u00adments, like how much time was spent washing them and when. Narratives end. Quantities, hours, and dishes don\u2019t. Maybe dishes pro\u00adduce cate\u00adgo\u00adries and distinctions.
\nMaybe one kind of dish is washed but not the other, one kind of tech\u00adnique used and not ano\u00adther. To stu\u00addy the dishes could result in an account of spaces, of tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgies, of tools and ins\u00adtru\u00adments, or infra\u00adstruc\u00adtures, eco\u00adno\u00admics. A work like that could demons\u00adtrate the cri\u00adsis that occurs in its absence : the dishes have piled up, the smells and cockroaches have come. Or it could result in an account of class, race, and gender\u2014who, in the cur\u00adrent arran\u00adge\u00adment of the world, does the dishes and who does not.
\nDoing the dishes falls inside a lar\u00adger set of rela\u00adtions made up of neces\u00adsi\u00adty. We have phy\u00adsi\u00adcal bodies. These exist inside and among the lar\u00adger bodies of the world. All of these bodies\u2014ours and eve\u00adry\u00adthing else\u2019s\u2014are adhe\u00adred to decay, are always rui\u00adning or on the verge of it, never evade entro\u00adpy or col\u00adlapse. The ordi\u00adna\u00adry ongoin\u00adgness of our exis\u00adtence, like eve\u00adry time we do the dishes, is eve\u00adry time we try to block ruin\u2019s path.
\nThere is the work of making the world, which is the world that\u2019s good to look at, and there is the quie\u00adter work of kee\u00adping the world okay once it is here. Making the world is a concrete plea\u00adsure, but the nature of the rest of it has yet to be deter\u00admi\u00adned. It\u2019s hard to make a judg\u00adment of the senses regar\u00adding the some\u00adtimes invi\u00adsible and neces\u00adsa\u00adry efforts we exchange bet\u00adween us.
